I have a Steelers Super Bowl DVD. Why does the film look completely different from a televised game?
It’s because the Steelers are totally awesome.
No?
Well, the Steelers are, in fact, totally awesome, but that’s not the reason your Super Bowl DVD is different from the televised game. The explanation begins and ends with NFL Films.
Since it is a subsidiary of the NFL, NFL Films has more access to the sidelines, coaches, players, facilities, and locker rooms than other TV networks. They have exclusive rights to this footage, so they can cut it and distribute it how they please. With the extra angles and access that they have, they are able to splice game footage with their on the field footage to complete the experience. Add some classical music and John Facenda and you’re good to go.
